Tokens and types

In relation to words in a text, a count of the tokens would be a count of the total number of words used (regardless of type), whilst a count of the types would be a count of the different words used (ignoring any repetition). The type-token distinction in relation to signs is important in social semiotic terms not as an absolute property of the sign vehicle but only insofar as it matters on any given occasion (for particular purposes) to those involved in using the sign.
